Ghirardelli’s newest flavor of chocolate bars and mini squares is just hitting the shelves: Milk Chocolate with Peanut Butter Filling.
Thanks to a high-placed secret source in the Ghirardelli Chocolate Factory (we’ll call him Willy Wong-ka), we got a sneak preview. So will it give Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups a whipping ? I’ll use my patented scale of 1 to 10 lip-smackers, with 1 being the “Bleh, save your money’’ far end of the spectrum; 5 being the “I’m not sure I’d buy it, but if it was just there, I might nibble some’’ middle-of-the-road response; and 10 being the “My gawd, I could die now and never be happier, because this is the best thing I’ve ever put in my mouth’’ supreme ranking.
Ghirardelli Milk Chocolate with Peanut Butter Filling: What I tried was one of the mini squares. It’s a very thin milk chocolate wafer with an equally thin layer of very creamy peanut butter inside, along with a few tiny, crunchy bits of peanut. Whereas a Reese’s cup gives you a wallop of homey, satisfying, dense peanut butter, the Ghirardelli’s is more subtle, perhaps a tad more elegant in taste. It’s hard to top a Reese’s, but the Ghirardelli’s is pretty darn good. Rating: 7.

I feel like peanut butter is the latest trend in chocolates, taking over last year’s burnt caramel and fleur de sel sprinkles. At the recent Chocolate Salon in San Francisco, I tasted at least three versions from chocolate vendors that I could spot. I didn’t try Ghiradelli’s, but I have to say my favorite peanut butter version was by Charles Chocolates. Very crunchy and natural like. Although, can anyone really replace Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups?

I love good chocolate and I’m sure Ghiradelli’s new variety is good, too. But, when this skinny girl wants peanut butter/chocolate there is no substitute - it’s gotta be Reese’s.

Thanks for being the canary in the coal mine! I’m tempted enough to at least do some quality control when I can get my hands on one. Nice photo.

I agree that it’s really hard to beat a Reese’s. Not only is it so peanut-buttery good, but it’s also a delightful taste of childhood. One bite and you can’t help but feel like a carefree 10-year-old all over again.

The VERY BEST pb chocolate is the Reese’s egg that comes out only around Easter. It’s in a yellow, flowered wrapper every year. I have a few in my freezer right now to hold me over until next March!

Stylegal (and you know I know you!), I can’t believe you still have Reese’s eggs left in your freezer. You have true willpower! I try to keep Girl Scout cookies in my freezer, but I always end up tearing into the stash and eating them still frozen.
